Parts of a Tower Crane

Some of the most remarkable structures around the world are built with cranes. The newer cranes are used in order to reach higher heights. Tower cranes offer the way to transport and lift materials, tools and building parts all around a construction site. There are several different components that assemble a tower crane once they are put together. Putting a tower crane together utilizes different pieces of construction machines.

Base

Normally, the base of a tower crane is made from a steel unit. The base is connected to a custom-designed concrete pad. This type of set-up gives the structure stability. Overall, the construction should be engineered and constructed well so as to operate at optimum safety.

Mast

The mast on the tower crane provides the equipment with its overall height. The mast is constructed out of separate steel parts which are connected together. The amount of sections determines the height of the crane. Typically, a tower crane has a design that enables the mast to grow during construction by adding further parts as the building process continues. This way the height of the crane could be specified, ensuring it has adequate height to perform the needed work safely and efficiently.

Slewing Unit/Top Climber

At the top of the mast is the slewing unit. It houses the motor and machines which allows the crane to rotate. A top climber is the piece of machine which allows the mast to grow. The top climber is located just below the slewing unit. Hydraulic rams in the top climber enable the slewing unit to be detached from the mast by raising it higher.

Boom

"Boom" is a term that particularly refers to the tower crane's working arm. The boom is made of steel sections attached together, that extend out from the top of the slewing unit, parallel to the ground. There is a trolley connected to the bottom that could extend the length of the boom. This particular trolley has the hoisting device.
