Forklift Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to run electric lift trucks should be charged frequently and correctly maintained. Safety procedures should be followed when somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is important to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is essential for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station must be located near the charging place. The route to the post should not be obstructed and an injured worker must be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery must be at the same amperage. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While in the vicinity of a battery and charging area, open flames are not allowed. Never permit things like for instance matches or lighters to be utilized while somebody is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging area properly ventilated. The recharging process can cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
